Celebrating 60 years of Bart

A few weeks back the racing industry honoured the legendary James Bartholomew Cummings as he notched up an amazing 60 years as a trainer.

And you don't get more special than having a super cool cartoon avatar of yourself made up.

Though you would think after all those years, all those early mornings and all those big race successes they could at the very least put up a statue in a prominent spot at Flemington that everyone could pose and take photos with?

The Cups King is starting to look a little frail, so let's hope he still has a few more Melbourne Cups to come.

Now training in partnership with his grandson, they are needing a miracle for their only qualified stayer PRECEDENCE to leap up the order of entry to get into the Melbourne Cup field. A miracle - or a sudden outbreak of horse chicken pox up at the Lloyd Williams Macedon Lodge training complex, who have a stack of runners. That would do the trick nicely.

Bart is one of the most recognizable and well known faces in Australia, despite having never, ever appeared on any sort of cooking or home renovation reality TV show, and is a larger than life character. Hence, we have done an awful, awful lot of Bart jokes over the years. And a lot of just plain awful jokes too.

Here is just a sample:

In our punting dictionary:

BART CUMMINGS MAGIC: The unexplained phenomena that results in all Bart Cummings trained horses in the Melbourne Cup field starting 5 points under their real odds on the tote.

In our ode to Bart:
as the defender of the Melbourne Cup from the internationals (and funnily enough VIEWED actually won that year):

There was only one man who could stand up . An ancient man. A wise man. A man with funny eyebrows. Some say older than time itself. Others say 80 years and 355 days, but they are just being picky. His ancient methods and wisdom had made him the stuff of legend. The mere mention of his name means his horses start under the odds on the tote year after year. One man against the rising forces of evil..

Arise Sir Bart, fair knight, and the crowds shall wave flags of your yellow with white checkerboard ensign.

Save us Sir Bart. Save us - and instead of one statue at Flemington there shall be a statue on every street corner. And every child will know thy name as the people's champion - and not a yellow skateboarding cartoon kid.

In our Unreal History of the Melbourne Cup, Part One and Part Two:

1927 - TRIVALVE
This year is also notable as being the year that Bart Cummings was born. Disappointingly he failed to even have a Cup runner, yet alone win a Cup in his first year of life.

1965 - LIGHT FINGERS
Bart wins his first Melbourne Cup and earns the nickname "The Guy With One Cup".

1966 - GALILEE
Bart wins his second Melbourne Cup and earns the nickname "The Guy With the Spare Cup".

1975 - THINK BIG
Think Big makes it back to back cups for Bart, who is elevated to the lofty title of "Melbourne Cup - Area Manager" and gets his own locker and car parking space.

1991 - LET'S ELOPE
Another win for Bart who again has to nick down to Ikea for extra storage options and yet another build it yourself trophy cabinet.

2008 - VIEWED
Yet another win for the Cups King, who is finally elevated to the title of "Most Powerful, All Mighty Cups Emperor - Lord of the Cups"

It would be great to see another Bart Cummings runner go around on Tuesday. Fingers crossed.

Last Week's Results

Maidens

It was all about maidens last week at Moonee Valley.

A maiden was allowed to run in the feature race. A maiden won the Cox Plate. There were blank faced fair maidens surrounding every post race interview, smiling awkwardly and mindlessly promoting stuff and things.

We discovered why they don't like letting maidens run in feature races - because it doesn't give the "WFA Stars" a fair chance !

The tips struggled with just the one obvious winner on top and a few equally obvious winners in the selections. The Betting Portfolio got back just enough for a train fare home and we are going to need to hit some major collects this week to turn things around before the end of Spring.

2013 Spring Campaign: 13 weeks - 2 profits - 8 returns - 3 wipe outs - Net: -$345.30

FLEMINGTON TRACK GUIDE
______________________________________

If you are heading out to races during Cup Week check out our Flemington Track Guide.

Handy hints with associated nonsense about where to meet, where to hang out and how to avoid the queues on course.

Toilets

It always pays to know where the sturdy, spacious permanent toilet blocks are. If you go out the back of the course, towards the main car park, past the book makers ring, just near the Flemington Heritage centre there is a major, solid, permanent and very under utilised toilet block. No frustrating lines for the ladies in their race day finest.

Wi Fi

The VRC have installed a state of the art Wi Fi service at Flemington to cope with the Cup Week demand.

It is also part of the government's fibre to the stable national roll out so that all of the international horses can video chat in high definition with their loved ones back home.

If phone battery life is an issue for you on a long social day, consider taking along two phones if you have an old model handy.

You can use one phone for phone calls and SMSes to keep up with friends, and use the other phone without a SIM card to connect to the free WiFi for Facebook, Twitter and betting applications. Such is the modern age.

TAB Website

If you are betting from home and the TAB website struggles under the weight of Cup Day 50 cent bets (as it normally does), there is also a stripped down simpler version which is worth a look TAB Lite.

PLONK $300 ON THE NOSE AT ONE AT ODDS
_______________________________________
Betfair First Bet Free

The Melbourne Cup is a great chance to have a value collect, even if you are only a smaller punter.

BETFAIR have increased their sign up offer to be a massive refund of up to $300 on your first bet if it loses.

This is your big chance to pick a roughie at odds in the Melbourne Cup and try to land a bounty.

The strategy is pretty simple. Set up a new account. Make a deposit. Then wait patiently. You have a week to place your bet.

Plonk up to $300 on the nose at one at odds when you spot a roughie you like.

If it wins - you are laughing.

If not - no drama, you get your money back and can start again and go back to betting normally.

Always read the Terms and Conditions on these offers - to make sure you make the most of them. The offer is for new accounts and it needs to be a single bet up to $300 so you need to find a price where you can bet the $300 in one go, else use the Betfair Starting Price or Tote options.

It is a great chance for a small punter to have a serious collect - with no risk.

Every week over spring we are going to pick out a horse at better than $10 to have a $300 no risk ping on.
