Best Racing Day of the Year
Derby Day is well known as the best day on the racing calendar.
Pretty much every single person anywhere in the vaguest vicinity of Melbourne, Australia heads out to Flemington.
This year they have even been gravitating into the atmosphere via helium balloon and jumping from space - just to make sure they get a good spot on the lawns.
But why is the racing so good?
For all the once a year Spring Carnival punters here is a race to race breakdown of the best racing program of the year.

Carbine Club Stakes
The first race of the program gives everyone watching at home the chance to remind themselves that Channel 7 are still doing the helicopter shot, followed by the low to the ground shot, followed by the close up on the home turn shot,
all of which means you will never have any idea at all where your horse is during the run. The Carbine Club was never quite as popular as the Mickey Mouse Club, as strangely the cute horse head singing kiddies never really took off.
Wakeful Stakes
For the 3YO fillies. It is a little known secret that they actually run this race twice. Once on Derby Day and they call it the Wakeful Stakes, and again on Thursday and they call it the VRC Oaks. No-one ever seems to notice it is just a replay. Just back the same horse, it always wins.
Yellowglen Stakes
The runners in this race all get a little tipsy in the green room prior to the start on some fine champagne, before making a daring streak around the course and hoping they don't get caught by security.
Coolmore Stud Stakes
A sprint race for 3YOs. This race is often won by prize stallions who are the only sporting personalities paid slightly more than prize footballers.
Off season, you will often seen these prize stallions with the social elite on Grand Final day at the MCG marquees looking dapper and well dressed and being asked for tips about the big game.
Lexus Stakes
This is a traditional last chance to get into the Melbourne Cup field, and the winner invariably gets the number 24 saddlecloth in the Cup and the coveted title of Best Roughie and Best Light Weight
chance.
The title Best Light Weight chance refers not to the light weight of the jockey as many people think, but rather that your wallet will be much lighter after backing it.
Mackinnon Stakes
For some runners this is the warm up lap for the Melbourne Cup, for others it is the consolation prize after not being good enough for other main spring races. Either way, just back the leader, it nearly always wins.
Victorian Derby
The feature race of the day and a traditional racing classic where the 3YO colts and geldings argue over whether the race should be over 2500M or 2000M. Some run one distance, some the other, which is why the field is always so spaced out in this race.
Myer Classic
For the fillies and mares this is the only race all year in Australia where the horses wear fascinators instead of blinkers and race in high heels, which often keeps the farriers busy before the start when the heels keep breaking off. Focus on the jockeys colours in this race, and make sure they are bold and daring, and all the trend this spring.
TAB.COM.AU Stakes
A classic race to end a classic day's racing. First run in 1853, the time honoured TAB.COM.AU Stakes was a ground breaker in race sponsorship. Predating both the creation of the tote and the invention of the internet, it caused a lot of puzzled looks at the time, but created great market branding.
So there you go. All the information you need to sound knowledgeable about horse racing come Derby Day.

Detour Via Adelaide
It was an action packed weekend of racing last week at Moonee Vallley.
On Friday night there was a startling finish in the Manikato Stakes with nine horses stretched across the track in the photo finish. Then followed a dramatic protest hearing, with stewards not only taking evidence from the jockeys, trainers and owners involved, but throwing in a
twist when they suddenly called a surprise witness being another jockey not involved in the protest. Classic gripping courtroom drama.
There does seem to be spate of jockeys protesting over anything and everything this spring, especially interference early on in the race.
We wonder how long it will be before a jockey throws in a protest for interference on the way to the barriers?
The Cox Plate was won for the first time by an international runner, who also become the first horse to win making his run wide and from last and covering the same distance as a trip from Melbourne to ADELAIDE.
There wasn't much to report in the tips, two favourites on top (Race 3: 1-LUMOSTY 1st W=$1.60, Race 9: 4-SUAVITO 1st W=$2.60) and one nice priced value winner in the selections, Race 2: 9-EIGHT BILLS 1st W=$16.00, but realistically the tips struggled.
The Betting Portfolio got a little something back, but is slowly sliding downhill with the Cup Week minefield ahead.

Getting There
-The train is the only way to go - don't even think about driving. Trains leave Flinders St and Southern Cross every few minutes during Cup week and will take you straight there.
Enjoy the scenic ride as you go through the Flemington industrial estate and past the large pie in the sky in the
Showgrounds. Remember to touch on and that you need to pre-book tickets during Cup
Week as there are no tickets for sale on the gate
The Bart Statue
- We are pretty sure, that if you read the fine print on your entry ticket, you will find that
it is actually one of the compulsory Terms and Condition of entry to get your photo taken with the Bart
Cummings statue.
Wander past at any time during Cup Week and you will find madly grinning punters posing with Bart for a photo opportunity.
Toilets:
- It always pays to know where the sturdy, spacious permanent toilet blocks are. If you go out the back of the course, towards the main car park, past the book makers ring, just near the Flemington Heritage centre there is a major, solid, permanent and very under utilised toilet block.
No frustrating lines for the ladies in their race day finest.

BRUNCH QUADDIE

We thought the TAB missed a great marketing opportunity with the introduction of the "Early Quaddie" earlier on this year.
It is not a very inspiring name.
We could have had the Early Quaddie, the Late Quaddie, and the Late Late Quaddie.
The TAB have been concerned about the downturn in retail wagering with more people betting online at home and on mobile devices.
But just imagine if they had called it the Brunch Quaddie.
Immediately there would have been long queues of eager inner city Melbournians lining up around the block for an over priced not quite breakfast and not quite lunch experience.
Utter the word Brunch and they will come. Problem solved.
