| FLEMINGTON : MAKYBE DIVA STAKES - 6th SEPT 2008 |
| Track: DEAD (4) - Weather: FINE - Rail: TRUE |
| Betting Portfolio ($50): Weather is fine and track should be firm side of dead with that extra bit of watering they tend to add. Rail is back to TRUE position and you will probably find the on pacers are advantaged, so watch for barriers especially in the 1400M and 1600M races. They will probably try to squeeze into that tiny strip of grass down the outside rail in the straight races, which just makes betting a nightmare – pick something that can dart back to the middle of the course and actually get a clear run. Big card and plenty to bet on, with some races wide open, so maybe best betting strategy is to take wide running doubles and hope for a result. RESULTS : Tracks favours towards on pacers - hard up against rails doesn't seem to be any good, but those within 3 horses of the rail win most races and very hard to make ground out any wider. Jockeys still clamber to outside rail down the straight - best to cut back to inside of track and get a clear run. Extra ordinary day for the tips. BEST WIN : Race 4: 9-SCHILLING $15 WIN, 6-JUNGLE RULER $5 WIN 3rd 6-JUNGLE RULER W=$9.90 Happy to back these two in Race 4. 9-SCHILLING is fitter for the 2 runs in, probably a little over rated, but good horse on his day, 1st up run was fine, then no problem with 2nd up run when beaten favourite – was 2nd up, up 300M, on a wet track and trapped out wide all the way – think it was totally excusable. Blinkers on today, fitter for the run and should be able to race on pace which is a big plus here over 1400M. Save on the in form leader 6-JUNGLE RULER who is always hard to run down and should be able to control the speed here. Keen to bet on these two RESULTS : 9-SCHILLING gets perfect run, looms up and does absolutely nothing. Bubble obviously burst - think we were the last to drop off him as did start pretty generous odds so looks like everyone else had already given up. 6-JUNGLE RULER honest on pace as always. QUINELLA : Race 2 : Box 5,8,9,10,13 x $1 = $10. 1st 8-LORD TAVISTOCK W=$3.00, 2nd 13-ROMNEYA W=$5.60. QUINELLA = $10 Wide open race and should be some value in the quinella. Particularly keen on the 13 and the 9. RESULTS : Get the quinella, but favourite wins, so its only money back - so very very exciting ! Keep following 13-ROMNEYA she is going to be a good filly. BEST ROUGH : Race 5: 16-SURFSIDE CHRISTMAS $2.50 EW Pretty consistent type who is under rated and ran on well 1st up. Has drawn badly, but hoping they might press forward and have her racing handy, seems worth a bet at the bottom of the weights at the odds on offer. RESULTS : Actually drops back from outside barrier, but finishes on pretty well. Keep following her. BEST ROUGH : Race 8: 16-GABBIDON $5 EW Taking this one on spec a little 1st up, but still very lightly raced and has a bit of ability on her day. Trick is in these straight races is always getting a clear run, so fingers crossed. RESULTS : Caught in mad rush to outside rail and does not do much. TURF DELI WONDER BET : Here we try and turn $5 into a whole lot more. FLEXI QUADRELLA: (Races 6,7,8,9) : 2,4 / 3 / 5,8,9,12,14,16 / 4,5,7,8,14 x $5 = 8.33 % There is a quaddie jackpot today for this meeting so might as well have a crack. Go narrow in the 1st leg and take the two on pacers that will get to the outside rail 1st, go one out on the HUSSLER in the 2nd, and go wide in the last two legs where there is sure to be a value winner. RESULTS : - / 1st 3-WEEKEND HUSSLER W=$1.70 / 2nd 9-GRAND DUELS W=$3.80, 3rd 5-ORANGE COUNTY W=$10 / 2nd 14-THE WOLVERINE W=$8.60 Quaddie actually pays OK even with short priced favourite and anchor. | Others: Pace: VERY SLOW Leaders : 8-MISSION CRITICAL Handy : 3-WEEKEND HUSSLER, 5-LIGHT FANTASTIC, 10-ZARITA Back : 1-EFFICIENT, 2-MASTER O’REILLY, 4-KIBBUTZ, 6-LITTORIO, 7-DEALER PRINCIPAL, 9-INDIO GLORIOSO, 11-RIVA SAN Chances: 3-WEEKEND HUSSLER is just such a lovely nice horse, we really like him, he is just so nice and lovely – Can we have one of those red caps yet? . Dominant beyond wildest expectations as a 3YO, started off spring with only the slightest blip on his permanent record with defeat in tough run 1400M 1st up when was coming off an injury scare. Then returned to his winning ways with tough gutsy win to run down front runner last start – really pricked his ears and knuckled down to the fight. Did have to pull everything out in last start win – sorry to break the news but he just isn’t going to be as dominant this spring as he was as a 3YO. However, seems to have this race in his keeping, better for the extra run, can sit just off the speed and reel them in in the straight, and think with extra fitness and better ride this time has the measure of his arch rival the (5). One to beat. 1st W=$1.70 5-LIGHT FANTASTIC kept his unbeaten record in tact with 1st up win in tough grinding race – they really tore along and he had the plus of waiting for the last run and being able to burst through the middle. Trainer actually expressed some concern about how tough a run he had 1st up. Rising through the ranks in a meteoric fashion and might go on with it, does seem to met every challenge sent his way. Pretty much down to a match race between him and the (3), and on the last meeting, when this one had the better run, and the other one was off an injury scare probably just tending towards WEEKEND HUSSLER. Will make a race of it though. Place: 2-MASTER O’REILLY rose through the ranks last spring to land the Caulfield Cup, then got too far back to really be a factor in the Cups Double. Just the cobweb shaker over Autumn as well. Put in a great run 1st up last spring to run 2nd over 1600M, so might be one who might do something fresh. Likely to drop well back though, and not much pace on in this race, so rough place at very best. Likely to finishing off OK though and everyone will be saying nice things about him. 10-ZARITA is a very capable staying mare who always puts herself into the race – big plus with her is that she races handy to the speed so makes her own luck. 2nd up and up 400M and made a little ground 1st up. Lightly raced and can go OK fresh, will probably get race run to suit here and won’t be far off them at the 200M. Should be thereabouts. Place 2nd W=$20.90 Sacking: 1-EFFICIENT makes his triumphant return to the scene of his VRC Derby and Melbourne Cup victories, and also to suss out the recreation and activities available for when he retires to become a clerk of the course. Only the 1 run over Autumn to shake out the cobwebs, and set for the Cup again this year. Took forever to find his form in spring last year so these are still just warm up runs. No 4-KIBBUTZ was beyond awful 1st up, just didn’t get going at all, they went along pretty quickly, and he just couldn’t get warm, or didn’t like the wet track, or put his shoes on the wrong feet, or something. Too bad to be true and expect improvement today, but will drop back and probably needs to see him do something before getting enthused again. Passing. 6-LITTORIO is a promising stayer who still hasn’t quite lived up to this potential. Spring came a little too soon last year, put in some great runs, but was obviously going to be better over time. Accounted himself well over Autumn in Sydney without winning. Could continue to improve this spring, but does drop back and again probably going to be left behind when they sprint here. Rough place at very best. 3rd W=$107.10 7-DEALER PRINCIPAL is 2nd up after made some ground at Caulfield 1st up. Up 400M in distance is a fair jump, though the distance and bigger track is likely to suit. Probably runs on, another who drops back and should be doing something at the end of the race when it’s all over. 8-MISSION CRITICAL carried weight in mediocre 1st up run at MV. On pacer who should be ridden forward and get easiest of leads in this – there is no other pace in the race at all. Can we bet on who is leading after 400M? Probably will show a little cheek if gets to lead as is a capable on pace stayer, but hard to have in this class off last run. No 9-INDIO GLORIOSO (ARG) is an ARG import, and unfortunately, we are not on top of the Argentinean form. Which is so slack. Apologies. Watch the market to see how he rates, but normally want to see these go around before forming an opinion, and the Argentinean imports haven’t been rocking Spring racing to it’s foundations in previous years. Passing 11-RIVA SAN is a capable staying mare on her day and was very consistent over last spring as a 3YO. Suddenly discovered a great fondness for wet tracks in the QLD winter. Can race handy or drop back, so not sure where she will settle 1st up. Tough to win 1st up over 1600M – and those with race fitness are the super horses so unlikely to be issuing a challenge. No Summary: Looks a dead set, clear cut, match race on paper and confident it will turn out that way. The best two horses are also the two in form and race fit horses, so hard to see anything else getting close over the 1600M, especially as most are early in their preparations. Pace is likely to be quite slow, with 8-MISSION CRITICAL leading and 10-ZARITA sitting off him. Really going to come down to riding tactics here, to be honest we thought the jockey went too early on 3-WEEKEND HUSSLER 1st up, ridden arrogantly and confidently like he was as a 3YO – but won’t be as easy this spring. But suspect he will win today, should be fitter for the 2 runs in, like that he has had one more run than main rival, had plenty of excuses 1st up – injury setback, went too early , so should turn the tables on 5-LIGHT FANTASTIC today. Again short odds so not sure there is all that much point having a bet, unless you have a lazy $100,000 to throw around, in which case we would like a luxury yacht (pretty please?). Let’s throw in 2-MASTER O’REILLY for third who might do something fresh. Race to watch. One to risk: Roughie: 2-MASTER O’REILLY RESULTS : OK, have to admit, that was kinda impressive. 5-LIGHT FANTASTIC bubble finally pops, 3-WEEKEND HUSSLER bubble blows and blows and blows bigger and bigger without popping. Sits on speed and slaughters them, probably was suited by the sit sprint, so there is still the unanswered question of a hard run distance race, but have to believe he can do just about anything. Actually very nice First Four dividend of $1000 which surely cannot have been too hard (in hindsight). 6-LITTORIO looking set for a good spring, 4-KIBBUTZ looking pretty ordinary again. |
