Turf Deli Racing News

Unlucky In Love

Your TV screens are about to get smoking hot.

Breaking news this week, that following on from this season of The Bachelor, reality programming will go to a whole new level with an exciting new show named The Diva.

Whilst dating programs have always been focused on beautiful human boys and girls, and camera loving men and women, The Diva will be the first to break new ground into the realm of animal husbandry.

Follow the dating life of three times Melbourne Cup winner MAKYBE DIVA as she strives to find true love in the push, shove and mount world that is the mating season.

MAKYBE DIVA has been unlucky in love since retiring from her stellar racing career.

Falling quickly for Irish backpacker GALILEO she quickly realised she was just another convenient pit stop for the ladies man and renown shuttle stallion. She quickly rebounded with the American sweet talker with the flashy name, FUSAICHI PEGASUS, but that didn't last, and since then the tabloids have had a field day with her string of failed relationships with the likes of ENCOSTA DA LAGO, LOHNRO, and HIGH CHAPARRAL, though the later was dismissed as just a charity shag.

Following the standard formula for any dating show, The Diva, will take her group of prospective stallions out on group dates, with specially chosen lucky lads getting to progress to one on one activity dates such as sky diving, ten pin bowling and um, horse riding (still working on that one).

At the end of each show, it is crunch time for the prospective suitors in The Stable Ceremony where The Diva has to choose which unsuspecting stallion to send onto the float and on his way home.

Will it be one stomp for Yes, or two stomps for No? Tune in and find out.

Last Week's Results

Squeaky clean

The tips struggled a bit last week with just the one short priced winner on top and the odd winner lurking in the selections.

The top pick had a very frustrating run in Races 2 through 8, running 3rd, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, SCR, 3rd and 2nd and you just knew coming into the last race that the Lay of the Day was likely to get up and bite hard - which it did. Funny how they always manage to get out from the inside at MV when you don't want them too, but when you are on them the gaps never open up.

Despite all that we managed to record a $36 profit in the Betting Portfolio with the Best Win bet getting up.

We were too clever by half, predicting that he would start too short (and we don't like backing short priced favourites), so we split the stake with the Turf Deli Wonder Bet in the trifecta, which we got, and duly collected five times more than we would have for a straight out win bet. Total and utter smarty pants.

BEST WIN: Race 4: 4-WROTHAM HEATH 1st W=$2.70

TURF DELI WONDER BET:
Race 4: TRIFECTA: 4 / 6,7,11 / 1,6,7,11,12,13,14 x $5 = 27.77%
1st 4-WROTHAM HEATH W=$2.70 / 2nd 11-PURPLE TIGER W=$10.80 / 3rd 12-CLEAR DIRECTION W=$16.60
TRIFECTA = $254.30 = $70.60

The Betting Portfolio has managed a profit for the last three weeks in a row, which is always nice - and surprising at the same time.

2014 Spring Campaign: 4 weeks - 3 profits - 1 return - 0 wipe outs - Net: +$88.20

FROM THE RACING ARCHIVES - MAKYBE DIVA TRIBUTE
_____________________________________________________________________

Every week this spring we will be delving into the climate controlled historical archives (also known as the garage) to pull out something that only exists in hard copy from the Racing Archives.

THIS WEEK: THE FORGOTTEN CUP

When racing historians talk about the great MAKYBE DIVA, they talk about her three Melbourne Cups. Or the casual stroll around Moonee Valley that earned her a Cox Plate.

But no-one ever mentions her Werribee Cup win in 2002.

Come on, it was only her sixth start!

And she had to carry, umm 51.5kgs.

And just look at the quality of the field she beat! How many of those horses now have statues of them gracing racecourses around Australia? Heaps surely?

OK maybe it is best forgotten.

But to paraphrase Lee Freedman's famous quote and apply it to this occasion, "go and find the youngest child on the course" - and tell them they are far too young to be drinking...
