The Sleeping Monolith
Caulfield looked a treat on Caulfield Guineas Day.
The place had definitely had a pre-spring spruce up.
The weather was glorious.
There were sleek new flat screen TVs for tote approximates, lush green lawns and everything looked shiny and new.
But we were really sad to see that the grand old tote board at the end of the straight had been covered up.
We think it added a lot of character to the course.
We wrote a story last year paying homage to the grand old tote boards which are disappearing at a rapid rate.
Guess it could have been worse, they could have gone for one of those big yellow billboards you see on freeways promoting longer lasting stuff that your email filter probably won't like.
There are still quite a few issues to be ironed out with the big video screens replacing the tote board.
For punters, seeing the approximates for the whole field at once is really important, instead of waiting for each runner to scroll through. Turn your head and you need to wait for the field to scroll through again. Sneeze and you miss it again.
They really need to show the numbers and results prominently as they cross the line and put up the dividends as they come through, instead they were showing the video footage. Even worse, on Caulfield Guineas Day, the results at the bottom of the big screens got stuck on Race 7 for the rest of the day.
Luckily the main races weren't the last races of the day...

Sure we could spend all day playing with our phone, but we loved the thrill of the numbers popping up into the frame and waiting in suspense for a surprise extra large exotic dividend to appear.
We could only look longingly towards the big monolith at the end of the straight and dream of better times.

Animal Onesies
Those lush, green lawns last Saturday were patrolled by a surprising number of racegoers
wearing animal onesies.
Once the clothing of choice of the quirky inner city dress up, the animal onesie is now extremely commonplace as everyday attire. It is interesting to note that member's dress codes do not actually explicitly exclude the wearing of the animal onesie.
Try it - we dare you.
The tips went along pretty well, with 2 winners on top and 6 winners in the selections from 9 races, including a few quinellas. Most of the obvious picks did win though, so there wasn't that much in the way of value collects, but we did
manage to find the $770 quaddie in the top two selections.

Race 6: 6-ATLANTIC JEWEL 1st W=$1.30, Quin = $3.10
Race 7: 7-BRITISH GENERAL 1st W=$7.80, Quin = $31.10

Race 10: 4-LONG JOHN 1st W=$3.60
Quaddie: 7-1-2-4 pays $770.70
Frustratingly, the poor Betting Portfolio can't take a trick at the moment, with the
win bets running 2nd, the each way bets running 4th and the quinellas both being in the finish but not posting a winning combination.

If you cast your eye out onto the course in between races, you might just catch sight of the professionalism of some jockeys.
Carefully walking the track. Pounding the ground. Watching for wear and tear. Looking for the best going to ensure they give their mounts the very best chance in the next race.
Either that - or they lost their bloody car keys during the running of the previous.

Thankfully, neither of them will be performing Daryl Braithwaite's Horses.
Although this may be considered for future years if there is any trouble getting the crowd to leave quickly at the end of the day.
