Turf Deli Dud Of The Week
Owners of Kaapstad Way 30/10/00

A great big Turf Deli raspberry to the owners of Kaapstad Way, who this week booted off jockey Gary Grylls who rode him so well for 2nd place in the Caulfield Cup, to put Damien Oliver back on. Whilst we realise that it's a harsh and dog eat dog world out there we thought this was a bit rough.

Like a kid opening up his Christmas presents, "Jumping Jack" Oliver quickly tires of his new toys and goes searching for newer, brighter, shinier and faster ones with more flashing lights and whirling noises. "Fair weather" Oliver had originally been on Kaapstad Way, but jumped off when the ride on Fairway come up in the Caulfield Cup, and the 7 day forecast suggested rain for the weekend.

Who, the hell, in Melbourne trusts the 7 day forecast ?

Anyway, now that Fairway is finished for the spring,he quickly schmoozes back to his old buddies, saying how sorry he is, he'll never do it again and how he is now their bestest friend. We feel the bad karma and the rain clouds approaching for Melbourne Cup day.

HoofNote : We fully admit we are speaking through our hip pocket here, but you don't win Melbourne Cups coming from last on the home turn. Kaapstad Way ran on strongly from last, but, funny enough, ran out of puff about 100M from home to run 4th. We tut - tutted from the cosy comfort of the couch.
