PDL and the Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup favourite PUISSANCE DE LUNE is looking to rewrite the history books after making a very impressive, early spring, winning appearance last week in the Lawrence-Liston Stakes.

For those of who didn't make it past Year 9 French, PUISSANCE DE LUNE is correctly pronounced as follows:

PUSS - ANTS - DA - LOON (in your best Oztralian accent)

Or just PDL, because it is far, far easier. PDL is attempting to go onto win the Melbourne Cup - a double no horse has ever completed before.

Probably because it is a ridiculously long time between races.

And most genuine Melbourne Cup horses have better things to do in mid August.

But this guy may just be a super freak, and Australian racing needs a stand out horse now there is no BLACK CAVIAR or SO YOU THINK around.

After the impressive 1st up win, the bookmakers quickly wound the horse into a extremely prohibitive $5 for the Melbourne Cup.

Which is fantastic odds !

Because the Melbourne Cup is only a mere 12 weeks away. And racehorses are such reliable consistent creatures, that hardly ever get injured, and can keep their form for long periods of time. And it is not like any other horses will appear in the mean time and win impressively and look like a genuine threat - is it?

Considering that MAKYBE DIVA was $4.40 on race day, when going for her third Melbourne Cup, after winning the Cox Plate in a jog canter in her previous run, the $5 on offer now about PDL just looks like luxurious odds - doesn't it ?

So seeing PDL is a sure thing, it is probably best to launch into the $5 on offer now, and then place some other great value savers on the only possible things that could go wrong between now and the first Tuesday in November.

Such as:

- France goes to war with Australia and all French citizens, French foods and French named horses are rounded up and sent to a hastily reconstructed penal settlement in Tasmania. Get on now - $6.50 with BestWarBets.com.

- The VRC decides that over 150 years is a pretty good innings and sells up Flemington for a massive apartment tower complex, cause well, there are 3 other race courses in Melbourne, and really, you can never, ever have enough apartments. Snap up the $10 on offer with BestInvestorBets.com.

- The owners of PDL admit they have always had a life long desire to win the 2800M race on Cup Day and make a surprise switch to run in Race 3 instead of the feature. These odds won't last long at $15 with MugsBets.com.

- Animal rights activists successfully shut down the racing industry after gathering 100 Facebook likes on a warm and fuzzy photo of a pretty horsie playing with a fluffy bunny in a field. Market mover at $7.50 with FluffyBunnyBets.com.

- The Australian Trainers Association collectively decide that grey horses already have it too good with the annual greys only race on Oaks Day, and successfully petition to have the Melbourne Cup conditions changed to be "all horses except greys". A nice roughie at $19.50 with StopTheGreysBets.com.

- The Melbourne Cup is postponed indefinitely due to an on course media frenzy when Elvis is found to be alive and well and working replacing divots on the course proper between races - $4.50 with BestElvisBets.com.

Stumbling Into Spring

We stumbled into spring last week at Caulfield, with a cringe worthy performance worthy of a bumbling first time election candidate. Vote one Turf Deli.

If our tips were in an easy to view video format, instead of all this hard, having to read stuff, we almost certainly would have gone viral in global punting shame.

Barely a winner in sight, the Betting Portfolio bombed out, and to top things off - the Lay of the Day kicks off Spring with a blow to the guts by defying the racing pattern to lead all the way in the last.

At the very least the detailed form guide was pretty close to the mark in the feature race.
