Turf Deli Racing News

Farewell Bart

There is not much that we can add to the nation wide mourning, and celebration of the great achievements and life of James Bartholomew "Bart" Cummings, who passed away this week aged 87.

The various news reports and tribute stories have said it all.

In an era where fame and celebrity is so easily handed out, here was someone held in the highest regards by an entire nation over a lifetime.

He never seemed to be one to seek publicity, and was always under stated and genuine.

You really can't get more iconic than Bart.

For generations he has been able to be instantly identified by only his first name such was his status.

And that was well before rap music performers tried to make it cool to have only one name.

Bart was far cooler. And without even trying.

There are plenty of great Bart stories and we get a chance to look back now over so many highlights. Famous one liners, fabulous stories and wonderful horses.

The long list of champion horses he trained, including:

- 268 Group 1 wins
- 12 Melbourne Cups
- 5 Cox Plates
- 7 Caulfield Cups

We would be happy to just back 12 Melbourne Cup winners - yet alone train or own them.

It likely that no-one will ever match his Melbourne Cup winning record. Almost certainly, no-one ever will have as distinctive eyebrows.

He appeared to have been around forever, but his legacy will last probably even longer again as his name will always be associated with the Melbourne Cup.

There are invariably comparisons to another great Australian sportsman, Sir Don Bradman, in terms of sporting achievements that will never bettered.

Though Bart never received a knighthood for his contributions to horse racing. We would suggest a saint hood would be more appropriate - it would be easy enough to prove his miraculous powers.

- Getting WA battler ROGAN JOSH to win a Melbourne Cup in 1999.

- Defeating a field of highly rated overseas contenders to take the Cup home for the local trainers in 2008 with VIEWED.

- The mere mention of this name miraculously sent the tote odds of any horse in the Melbourne Cup plummeting.

We have often joked that it is a compulsory condition of entry of going to the races at Flemington to get a photograph taken with the Bart statue.

We are sure nearly all of you reading this have one in your photo album.

Walk past there at any race meeting and you will see people flocking to pose for photos, such was his iconic status.

His passing will surely make the statue even more of a popular focus point for Cup Week race goers and means he will continue to have a presence at Flemington for generations to come.

Racing Victoria and the Victoria Racing Club have organized a public memorial service for Bart Cummings to be held at Flemington on Makybe Diva Stakes Day on 12/09/2015 with free entry to the races that day.

It is sure to attract a huge crowd from the racing industry, punters, racing lovers and the general public and will be a fitting tribute to a lifetime of achievement.

Rubbish Tips

The tips last week at Caulfield were pretty rubbishy. Although the rain did come, the racing pattern tended to favour those racing on the speed, and we tipped mainly back markers. Which was a valuable time saving tactic as it meant most of our runners were already well beaten before the home turn and you could get back to the household domestics.

The $50 Betting Portfolio got back some of its money, but has slipped slightly into the red. Hopefully, that is gently tipping the toe in and not a full scale downwards plunge.

2015 Spring Campaign: 3 weeks - 1 profit - 2 returns - 0 wipe out. Net: $-6.60

We report all of our results as a $1 Victorian TAB tote dividend as a consistent benchmark that everyone has access to, no matter when the bet is placed, though often better odds are available through the various corporate bookmakers.

You can play along with us this spring by opening a Sportsbet account and following the weekly tips. Make sure you are getting the best odds and money back offers possible with Top Tote Plus from Sportsbet.

FROM THE RACING ARCHIVES - THE HORSE FROM HEAVEN
_____________________________________________________________________

Every now and then this spring we will be delving into the climate controlled historical archives (also known as the garage) to pull out something that only exists in hard copy from the Racing Archives.

THIS WEEK: SAINTLY

Also known as the horse from heaven, SAINTLY got up in a tight finish in the 1996 Cox Plate, before trouncing them in the Melbourne Cup 10 days later.

In those days, there was no big screen to watch the races on course, no Channel 78, no internet streaming - and you were lucky to even catch the odd word from the race caller on the Flemington lawn as the crowd roared towards the finish.

But you couldn't miss those white and black check with yellow sleeves colours as he ran away from them down the Flemington straight.

THE MOUNTING YARD
______________________________________

Expert punters know how important it is to check out the condition of your horse in the Mounting Yard before the race.

#1 - THE GIRTH

Study this closely. Look for muscle definition, tone and fat around the stomach area to show what sort of condition the horse is in.

Then look downwards and repeat the same process on yourself.
