Turf Deli Dud Of The Week
The Coongy Handicap 25/10/00

This week we are paying tribute to the poor old Coongy Handicap. Once the most dramatic of races, held midweek over 2000M at the Thousand Guineas meeting before Caulfield Cup, it was the last gasp attempt as horses tried the qualify for the Caulfield Cup. Now days, moved to Cup day itself, it serves as a B grade Caulfield Cup especially for horses who have promised all, delivered nothing, a championship of the perpetual black bookers and money suckers. So it was fitting this year that is was won by Typhoon, who is probably the King of the Never Deliverers (this was actually one of the reasons why we rated it on top).

Which may be a good time to rehash a punting glory story (we don’t often do this), but we backed MacDury at 100-1 (it paid $134 the win on the tote) to win the Coongy in 1995. Even better we landed 3 legs of a quaddie that paid $100,000 for 50 cents, been knocked out by the favourite (we got the 3 longest legs !!) in the 3rd leg.

Personally, we much preferred it last year when the Coongy was held before the Caulfield Cup. Wouldn’t it be more exciting if the winner of the Coongy still got automatic qualification for the Caulfield Cup ? The winner could just cool down out the back and get ready to go around again in 40 minutes. Even better, maybe they could start from the 2000M start rather than the 2400M start just to even things out a bit. At least it has not been renamed the Tupperware Cup.
