Turf Deli Racing News

Insert Colourful Racing Story Here

For years the Moonee Valley Racing Club have paid big money to try and attract international runners to run in the Cox Plate.

This year it has paid off big time.

From across the vast oceans has come a mighty thoroughbred steed, whose powerful tear away tactics and guts and determination breaks the will of those behind him.

His name is THE CLEANER (TAS).

Representing the exotic international racing destination across the vast oceans, more commonly referred to as Tasmania.

THE CLEANER (TAS) has captured the hearts of local race fans with his gutsy front running style. Plus he keeps on winning, which is always a great way to get people to like you.

This story is so full of racing characters and colour it surely has to be a set up.

Firstly, you have the cheap horse purchased for just $10,000 who has now won over $800,000 for his connections, with 18 wins from 43 starts. Connections sounds a little dull though. Let’s make them three golfing buddies instead.

Then to make the story more colourful you make him a gusty front runner who has won his last 4 starts at Moonee Valley. That means you can now do VO ROGUE comparisons. Excellent.

He will also need a nickname. Tiger? Prince? King? Ace? Lion? Lion of Longford where he is trained. Alliteration and the animal kingdom. That always works. Can the THE CLEANER defy history to be the first horse to claim the Longford Cup - Cox Plate double?

Now we just need some defining characteristic for the trainer. He has to be a battler, with a handful of horses, who chain smokes and treats his horses as pets. This stuff writes itself.

Then you need some urban tale of getting to the track.

Sailing across the seas, taking advantage of the Spirit of Tasmania two adults, two kids and one leading Cox Plate contender weekend getaway package. That is almost as good as the trainer rowing the horse across Bass Strait in a flimsy rowboat himself.

The strangest thing about this story is that it is absolutely true.

The first Tasmanian horse to contest the Cox Plate. A battling trainer with health issues. A cheap horse. A bold front runner taking on the best in Australia, and even sailing into Moonee Valley on the ferry.

You couldn't invent a more colourful racing story if you tried. When they jump in the Cox Plate, every punter, no matter who they have backed, will be secretly cheering for the fairytale story to come true.

Caulfield Cup Emergency

It didn't matter how many extra emergency horses they added to the Caulfield Cup field last week. They still couldn't beat the top weight. They probably could have kept going down the saddlecloth numbers into the fifties and they still wouldn't have been able to come up with a horse that could beat the winner ADMIRE RATKI. The poor jockey on the 2nd horse was busy writing his Caulfield Cup winners speech when the top weight flashed passed him in the straight.

The Turf Deli tips floundered, and although there were a few winners in the selections, we couldn't manage a top selection winner.

And yet, with a bit of scraping around, we actually managed to get most of our money back early on in the Betting Portfolio, and had plenty of chances to slide into proft

BEST WIN: Race 4: 12-FONTEIN RUBY 1st W=$10.70 (saver bet only)
QUINELLA Race 5: 2nd 9-UNDER THE LOUVRE 2nd W=$6.90, 5-LUCKY HUSSLER 1st W=$10.30.
Quin = $33.80

We are still well ahead so far this spring, but that could go south very quickly come the betting frenzy that is Cup Week.

2014 Spring Campaign: 12 weeks - 6 profits - 5 returns - 1 wipe out. Net: +$234.55

FROM THE RACING ARCHIVES - GO SUPER
_____________________________________________________________________

Every week this spring we will be delving into the climate controlled historical archives (also known as the garage) to pull out something that only exists in hard copy from the Racing Archives.

THIS WEEK: SUPER IMPOSE

When you talk about tough horses, they didn't come much tougher than SUPER IMPOSE.

He was best known as a feature miler, winning the Doncaster and Epsom Handicaps twice each, including the 1991 Epsom Handicap with a whopping 61kgs. With 20 wins and 24 seconds from 74 starts, he contested, and was in the finish of pretty much every big race you can think of. He won a Turnbull Stakes in 1989, ran 2nd in the Melbourne Cup in 1989 (even though he wasn't really a stayer), ran 4th in the 1991 Melbourne Cup, ran 2nd in the 1991 Cox Plate and won the Cox Plate in 1992.

The 1992 Cox Plate victory in a crack field and in a very dramatic race bought the house down at Moonee Valley.

It even inspired a song, which you may not have heard, by Melbourne alternative band Mr Floppy who mixed together various race calls with a catchy "Go Super" jingle. Long before mash ups were the cool thing to do.

It certainly makes a very refreshing change from Daryl Braithwaite's "Horses". Listen here to the song of the 1992 WS Cox Plate.

Handy hints with associated nonsense about where to meet, where to hang out and how to avoid the queues on course.

Notes:

- Watch out for the guy in the slightly creased suit creeping out from the race day stalls having done a sleep over from the Friday night Manikato Stakes meeting to get free entry into the Cox Plate.

- Stand in awe at the automated betting machines and watch the flying fingers of the TAB maestros. A true art form.

#3 - A HORSE WALKS INTO A BAR

Whilst some racehorses strive to race into Equine Immortality, others are quite content to just have an on-course bar named after them.

CAULFIELD CUP ROUND UP
____________________________________

#1 - IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

We always thought having the four emergencies for the Caulfield Cup was just a bit of a token gesture, but would you believe it last week they all got a run.

The Melbourne Racing Club were struggling to get a full field to the starting gates.

We really thought this could have been Clip Clop Clyde's big chance for Cup glory.

He was ready and raring to go as fifth emergency if they needed him. Track work watchers were saying he was kicking his brands off.

Darn it. We backed him big time in the pre-post markets too.

#2 - STEWARDS CRACK DOWN

After closely reviewing the footage, stewards had no option last Saturday but to fine several race goers for exceeding the maximum number of bad dance moves allowed in the straight.
