Melbourne Cup Obsession

In a startling medical breakthrough with wide ranging applications, scientists have announced that they have identified a new and highly contagious Melbourne Cup virus.

Suffers of this virus exhibit a range of symptoms including the following:

- nausea

- headache

- a tendency to wear the colour navy an awful lot

- an inescapable fixation on winning the Melbourne Cup that dominates every moment of their waking hours.

Doctors have been warned to be on the lookout for patients presenting complaining about sleep deprivation, having been up all night watching international staying races from obscure corners of the globe.

The virus, which has been given the name, LloydWilliamsItis has only one known case so far, who has been kept in quarantine at the Macedon Lodge Training Complex for some time to protect the general public.

This well documented case study reports that the patient requires daily Cup market updates, struggles to count past the number 24, and refuses to go to bed at the normal time unless he has his horsie pyjamas on, a cup of warm milk and milo and a bed time story about the Cup greats.

"There once was a horse named Empire Rose who was so very, very, big that she couldn't fit in the starting stalls properly and when she won the 1988 Melbourne Cup even though her head was first - the rump of the 2nd place getter was ahead of hers..."

Despite being a Montgomery Burns style recluse, instead of being a hindrance, this virus has instead given the Williams stable Melbourne Cup super powers.

Powers which are much more exciting than the silly, old, boring super powers like being able to fly, or the ability to become invisible or the very best super power of all - post race, punting form analysis hindsight.

But with great power, comes yes, you guessed it, great responsibility, but also even more greater power to pick and choose your staying races with your team. This spring the Williams stable has been placing their horses perfectly in various races, pulling the right string just about every time. They won the Melbourne Cup last year with GREEN MOON and the Caulfield Cup this year with FAWKNER.

This year, the Williams stable have managed an incredible six Melbourne Cup runners.

Six.

Most trainers are ecstatic to get just one.

You can just imagine them all jostling to grab the front seat in the float on the way down on Cup Day.

We don't think Lloyd Williams will be content though till he manages to get the full field of 24 - and complete the set.

To win a Melbourne Cup is every trainer's dream.

To quinella the event, extremely rare and nigh on impossible.

This year, the Williams team can not only train the quinella, trifecta, and first four, but also have the unprecedented opportunity of being the first stable in history to complete the prestigious Cup Sweep if they can snare last as well.

Last Week's Results

Derby Day Results

Derby Day was Flemington at its finest. Perfect weather, every one well dressed, well behaved and saying Please and Thank You and No, No, After You - I Insist.

However, the tips weren't at their finest with only the one lousy short priced winner on top and a few others floating around the selections. We did snare up the box trifecta in the staying race Race 3 though which paid a handy $621. The Betting Portfolio doubled up and only got back a pittance too which was not a very encouraging start to the week.

MY KINGDOM FOR A HORSE
_________________________________________

- You may own a large jewel encrusted crown

- You may have your own horse drawn carriage and troupe to escort you

- You may own a really big palace centrally located close to transport and shops

but nothing, nothing beats the feeling of owning a winning racehorse.

FLEMINGTON TRACK GUIDE
______________________________________

If you are heading out to races during Cup Week check out our Flemington Track Guide.

Handy hints with associated nonsense about where to meet, where to hang out and how to avoid the queues on course.

Toilets:
- It always pays to know where the sturdy, spacious permanent toilet blocks are. If you go out the back of the course, towards the main car park, past the book makers ring, just near the Flemington Heritage centre there is a major, solid, permanent and very under utilised toilet block. No frustrating lines for the ladies in their race day finest.

Wi Fi:
The VRC have installed a state of the art Wi Fi service at Flemington to cope with the Cup Week demand.

It is also part of the government's fibre to the stable national roll out so that all of the international horses can video chat with their loved ones back home.

Consider taking along two phones on race day if you have an old model handy and battery life is an issue.

You can use one phone for phone calls and SMSes to keep up with friends on a busy social day, and use the other phone without a SIM card to connect to the free WiFi for Facebook, Twitter and betting applications. Such is the modern age.

TAB Website:
If you are betting from home and the TAB website struggles under the weight of Cup Day 50 cent bets (as it normally does), there is also a stripped down simpler version which is worth a look TAB Lite.

JOCKEY BUSHRANGER CHALLENGE
____________________________________

QUESTION OF THE WEEK ?

Why is it that no jockeys have gone the urban hipster bushranger beard look like so many footy players have?

The impeccably maintained, wild bushranger beard would look great on a jockey astride a sturdy mount.

Accompanied by a steely look of determination in their eyes as they parade in the mounting yard, punters would know that this jockey means business - or that they are about to rob a stage coach on the way to the barriers.

Just seems a much more appropriate look for the racecourse, rather than galloping down the wing of the MCG.

PLONK $300 ON THE NOSE AT ONE AT ODDS
_______________________________________
Betfair First Bet Free

The Melbourne Cup is a great chance to have a value collect, even if you are only a smaller punter.

BETFAIR have increased their sign up offer to be a massive refund of up to $300 on your first bet if it loses.

This is your big chance to pick a roughie at odds in the Melbourne Cup and try to land a bounty.

The strategy is pretty simple. Set up a new account. Make a deposit. Then wait patiently. You have a week to place your bet.

Plonk up to $300 on the nose at one at odds when you spot a roughie you like.

If it wins - you are laughing.

If not - no drama, you get your money back and can start again and go back to betting normally.

Always read the Terms and Conditions on these offers - to make sure you make the most of them. The offer is for new accounts and it needs to be a single bet up to $300 so you need to find a price where you can bet the $300 in one go, else use the Betfair Starting Price or Tote options.

It is a great chance for a small punter to have a serious collect - with no risk.

Every week over spring we are going to pick out a horse at better than $10 to have a $300 no risk ping on.
